Consider Hagerty Collector Car Insurance
Hagerty Collector Car Insurance
I’ve owned classic cars for the past 30 years. It wasn’t until the early 90’s that I started using Hagerty Collector Car Insurance. They have both classic boat insurance and specialty collector car and are located in Michigan. In addition to the US market they provide classic car insurance in the UK and Canada.
Hagerty car insurance has been a strong provider and is one of the biggest & well known for collector car insurance. The Hagerty owners collect vehicles too and know the insurance needs for the vintage and specialty vehicle enthusiasts.
I owned a few classic Mustangs. One was a 1967 Shelby GT-500 that I bought in 1987. They were the only company I could find at the time that would cover the full value of the car. The typical insurance companies don’t understand the collector car market so they can’t offer the same protection the classic car insurance companies can and do. Also, you get more coverage for a lot less money than a company like Geiko, State Farm, Progressive, etc… your everyday driver insurance companies. Here are a few of the Haggerty policy details; 1) Agreed Value or Stated Value – covers the full insured amount in the event of a total loss, 2) Variety of deductibles- from none & higher, 3) Single liability charge- this will save money overall when you own more than 1 collector car insured with them. 4) Inhouse Claims Management- most of the claims will be managed with their own Hagerty classic car insurance professional, 5) Choose your own repair shop, 6) Instant new purchase coverage- when you buy a new car it’s automatically covered, 7) Car Show Medical Reimbursement- policy holders plus members of the family receive medical coverage if injured at a car show.
Other policies that Hagerty collector car insurance offers like coverage while your car is being restored, if the car is for business use, coverage while shipping overseas, and foreign liability & property damage in the event your vehicle is at a meet out of country. Riders are available for tools & antique memorabilia, your extra new old stock (NOS) or reproduction parts, and a car club liability program. Haggerty s optional “Hagerty Plus” offers additional benefits for it’s members like; roadside assistance, subscription to the Hagerty car insurance magazine (not bad for a free magazine full of tips and advice from fellow car owners), and access to Ask Hagerty concierges service. They have great online community that can help you with car clubs, advise articles and much more.
Hagerty insurance has a few restrictions you’ll need to know about. Anyone with more than a few minor traffic violations including accidents the past few years may not qualify for their coverage. Your car can only be used on a limited basis. Not daily commutes to work only classic car show events, repairs shops and the occasional Sunday drive. Other specialty car insurance companies may not have restrictions on how often you’ll drive your classic. Almost all specialty insurance companies require your vehicle be in locked storage when not driven for extended periods of time. Also, you’ll need to prove you own a daily-driver and it’s insured in your name. Hagerty car insurance covers most muscle cars, antique autos, classic autos, street rods, muscle cars, antique tractors, collector motorcycles. Some vehicles they don’t cover include; most Shelby Cobra replicas, most pro-street vehicles, and motorcycles with non-stock performance mods. You’ll need to speak to them to know for sure if you and your car qualify.
Here’s one of my favorite Hagerty commercials (two Cougars), it was a classic when it was released. I’m a Cougar owner too, not the one in the passenger’s seat. Enjoy!
So consider Hagerty collector car insurance if you want to shop and compare in case you’re with someone else now or just bought your first collector vehicle they’re a great option if you meet their requirements. I may be a little biased because I’ve been with them for over 18 years. You can check out their website and get a quote in 90 seconds!

My sister got a really good deal through Tesco Value Insurance for her first car. She is a bit older than you though. Most insurers will give you a free quote online so it’s well worth shopping around
