Cheap Van Insurance
Cheap van insurance for a VW Bus
Growing up in Ann Arbor back in the 70’s I saw tons of rough vans and trucks. My friend had a VW bus he owned because he said “I got cheap van insurance for it”. My friends and I owned regular cars that were easy to work on compared to today’s autos. Dave always seemed to have problems with his micro bus in the winter time. There’s nothing like having no heat in your car in the middle of January in Michigan when you’re stuck in traffic.
Back then, most of us didn’t worry about the price of gasoline or insurance. Except Dave and his cheap van insurance, lol
Once in a while you had to make a few repairs like new exhaust or brakes but nothing major (or at least you hoped). Over time, Dave repaired his VW bus (or hippy bus) as we use to call it. He was an artist and would add pretty cool designs to the interior of the bus. The outside was not the best looking paint job but he was creative when it came to colors and designing a mural for it. I believe he used the “brush-on” or roller technique. Most of the guys in our class had their favorite car or truck. Two other friends owned Ford pick-ups early 1970’s F-150 models. One had a 360 motor that loved to drive fuel. He could also lay a burnout with his single track rear end.
I used an Allstate insurance broker because that’s what my parents had and knew the Allstate Agent really well. Allstate was not considered cheap van insurance by Dave’s standards. I forget who he used. I don’t remember if they were a national outfit or local to Michigan. Twenty years ago you couldn’t shop for insurance online like you can today. Also you need to be careful when choosing the agents and brokers online. This is not a “one-size fits all” selection for picking any company with cheap van insurance, lol. It seems like there are many new companies popping up every year. Some come and go. They all have to focus on price, price, and price. Find the company that works for you and your vehicle. Once you have located a few try to negotiate with the company you want. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Most of the time this will help you find the best company for your situation when looking for cheap van insurance.
If you want to check out your local insurance brokers first, go through the phone book or online directory and get quick estimates first. Then you can use these as benchmarks when you start searching online. It makes the process a lot easier and faster when you know what you’re looking for. Just remember whether you are looking for cheap van insurance, cheap truck insurance or the cheapest auto insurance in the world, don’t be taken-in by the first quote you see or get. Shop around and make sure you compare “apples to apples”. In the long-run you’ll save a lot of headaches in case of a claim – if you happen to get the wrong coverage. All the cheapest auto insurance in the world will be of no benefit to you. Be sure to ask the agent(s) what value your van may have and if it can be repaired in case of an accident. You might not need comprehensive collision if the cheap van is… well cheap.

I used to have Allstate, then I switched to St. Farm, then to Mercury and finally to the Hartford. I don’t know that any one is better than the rest. Price shouldn’t be the deciding factor but service after the accident should be the main concern.

This article was very helpful. However, I was wondering how would one know if one estimate is cheap or expensive. What is considered “cheap” for auto insurance?

How much you pay for auto insurance depends on several factors, including your age and marital status, where you live, and what you drive. You can’t do anything about your age, and few people will move just to lower their insurance premium. You can, however, choose a vehicle that costs less to insure.

I hear those VW vans go faster backwards than forwards! (Maybe that’s why the insurance was so cheap!) It’s cool that things are more competitive these days, and insurance companies actually have to compete for customers’ business.
